New Marketing Talent Communities!

September 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

GrouperEye- Start the Revolution! Join a talent community. Get a job or internship. Gain a reputation.

The future of college recruiting is here.  September 15th marks the day that everything changes.  GrouperEye.com, a new website dedicated to changing college recruiting forever, has launched with a sexy new makeover.

What is GrouperEye?  It is a solution to the status quo.  It is a new way for students and companies to connect.  Most importantly, it is a better way to find the perfect job- or the perfect student to fill that job. GrouperEye allows companies to build talent communities.

How does it work?  Companies create profiles, run challenges, and post updates that students can follow.  Students are able to follow the companies they are interested in, impress them with their smarts in case challenges, and get their foot in the door with the companies they really care about.  Sure beats going to a career fair and throwing your resume into the pile, huh?

Students- get an internship or entry level job because of what you can do.  Not what you look like on your resume, not where you went to school, and not how much you can charm someone in an interview.  Companies- find better talent.  Identify those diamonds in the rough that you would have missed using your conventional tools. And do it in a new, exciting, and scalable way.

The future is here. Join a talent community!

Marketing Internship Application Strategy

August 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Getting a marketing internship is all about, you guessed it, marketing! My advice in landing a killer marketing internship is to (1) be unusual or (2) work for free. I know this sounds absurd, but try it.

Look at what everybody else is doing to get a marketing internship and do the opposite. If people are working on their resume, go out and meet people! If people are applying online, go and drop off your marketing internship at the office. Being unusual means that you will standout. Period. Standing out is vitally important. I talked with a cool brand the other day and the HR internship lead said that she recieved over 300 applications per 1 internship spot. You will lose if you choose to be normal – you might as well go buy a lottery ticket.

Okay, so let’s take a quick look at my second peice of advice – working for free. The alternative is to send out hundred of internship cover letters and internship resumes. Sure, you can do this, but it’s truly pointless in my opinion. Why not approach and company and tell the hiring manager of CEO that you want to work for free on a certain project. This to me is a great way to build skills and get noticed.

Good luck with the marketing internship hunt!

Marketing Internship – SC Johnson

August 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey Guys, I just stumbled across this marketing internship from SC Johnson. You can checkout more details about the marketing internship on their site.

Here is the marketing internship:
____________________________

Marketing Intern Program

Great Projects – Great Managers

A Marketing Internship at SC Johnson gives you training and first-hand experience in Brand Management. The unique people and culture of our family company set us apart from all others.

“Excellent training program, social events as well as challenging and rewarding program.” (Mktg Intern, 2001)

“Great people, winning brands, good training.” (Mktg Intern, 2001)

Projects

Intern assignments are designed to be instructive, challenging and rewarding. They reflect a balance of strategic initiatives and tactical elements, analysis and creative development. A Marketing Intern’s real project list looked like this:

  • Redesign the consumer activity cycle, lead cross-functional brainstorm to identify need gaps, work with R&D to find current technologies/products that can address need gaps and develop concepts for new product ideas
  • Conduct an in-depth analysis of a key competitor
  • Manage Promotion budget for new product launch including creative development
  • Participate in Media Planning and Advertising Copy Development for new product launch

Integration

High levels of exposure to the people and culture at SC Johnson is important to successful internships. A few of the things we do to help integrate Interns into the company are:

  • Informal Brown Bag Lunches with each of the Business Vice Presidents, North American President, Worldwide President & CEO, and Chairman
  • Lunch & Learn Case Studies: Provide insight into the “SCJ Way” and Marketing Best Practices while exposing interns to other product divisions and managers
  • Category Manager Sponsor Groups
  • Peer Advisor Program

Training

Structured workshops and informal, interactive sessions taught from a Marketing perspective provide SC Johnson interns with relevant training that can be immediately applied to projects.

Community Service

The Johnson family believes the company and the people who work here have a responsibility to help make every place a better place because we are there. Each year, Marketing Interns have the opportunity to positively impact Racine, Wisconsin, and test their project management skills by organizing a marketing-wide Community Service Project. Past projects have built a neighborhood playground, delivered food to those in need and provided role models to elementary students in low-income areas.

Social

Don’t worry, even with all of that training and responsibility for key projects, you will still find time to relax and have fun. In fact, SC Johnson makes sure of it by organizing and sponsoring many social events that provide great exposure to the Milwaukee/Racine/Chicago area.

Goal Of Marketing Internship

August 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

What is the goal of your marketing internship? For that matter, what is the goal of marketing in general. I would argue that it is very, very simple – the goal of marketing is to help sales. Sales is the lifeblood of an organization, although I do admit that it gets a bad rap. Marketing exists to make sales easy. Why do we have commercials, to make the sales easy. For example, Lexus runs ads on TV so that the car salesmen on the lot has an easier time selling the new Lexus.

People hate sales for a number of reasons that I don’t want to get into right now. Being a sales person stinks these days because you automatically get looked down on. Marketing people need to understand that they exist for these people. So, they must listen to them. Why aren’t customers buying? Ask sales. Your sales team should be the catalyst for your marketing teams decisions on what to attack.

Let’s think about this in terms of your marketing internship. Your marketing internship exists to increase sales and thus generate revenue for the company. Marketing interns have the unique ability to impact the bottom line, immediately. If you help the sales team in your marketing internship, the company will not forget about you.

Do not forget this. The best thing to do during your marketing internship is to make sales easy. Period.
