Marketing Internship Application Strategy

Getting a marketing internship is all about, you guessed it, marketing! My advice in landing a killer marketing internship is to (1) be unusual or (2) work for free. I know this sounds absurd, but try it.

Look at what everybody else is doing to get a marketing internship and do the opposite. If people are working on their resume, go out and meet people! If people are applying online, go and drop off your marketing internship at the office. Being unusual means that you will standout. Period. Standing out is vitally important. I talked with a cool brand the other day and the HR internship lead said that she recieved over 300 applications per 1 internship spot. You will lose if you choose to be normal – you might as well go buy a lottery ticket.

Okay, so let’s take a quick look at my second peice of advice – working for free. The alternative is to send out hundred of internship cover letters and internship resumes. Sure, you can do this, but it’s truly pointless in my opinion. Why not approach and company and tell the hiring manager of CEO that you want to work for free on a certain project. This to me is a great way to build skills and get noticed.

Marketing Intern

The Marketing & Communications (M&C) department works to create the public face of StoryCorps by educating the public about the organization’s mission, initiatives, and tiers of service. The overarching goal of M&C is to communicate that StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit organization worthy of general public interest, press attention, and financial support.

Marketing-specific functions include writing and designing all printed and digital materials, maintaining the StoryCorps and National Day of Listening websites, providing technical support for the Facilitator blog, writing the weekly StoryCorps eNewsletter, maintaining a presence on social networking sites, and overseeing all branded collateral of the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities
Projects may include, but will not be limited to:

Support marketing efforts to increase awareness of StoryCorps and create brand recognition.
Assist in designing new print and online marketing materials, including brochures, outreach packets, and branded collateral.
Monitor and update inventories for printed materials. Organize and manage photography archives.
Help write content for weekly eNewsletter. Correspond with eNewsletter subscribers when necessary.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for an individual who is creative, organized, detail-oriented, and interested in gaining experience in marketing, advertising, and information design. Resourcefulness, ability to take initiative, and to work both independently and as a team are vital. Communication skills, both verbal and written, and experience with Microsoft Office are essential. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and basic HTML is preferred.

Goal Of Marketing Internship

What is the goal of your marketing internship? For that matter, what is the goal of marketing in general. I would argue that it is very, very simple – the goal of marketing is to help sales. Sales is the lifeblood of an organization, although I do admit that it gets a bad rap. Marketing exists to make sales easy. Why do we have commercials, to make the sales easy. For example, Lexus runs ads on TV so that the car salesmen on the lot has an easier time selling the new Lexus.

People hate sales for a number of reasons that I don’t want to get into right now. Being a sales person stinks these days because you automatically get looked down on. Marketing people need to understand that they exist for these people. So, they must listen to them. Why aren’t customers buying? Ask sales. Your sales team should be the catalyst for your marketing teams decisions on what to attack.

Let’s think about this in terms of your marketing internship. Your marketing internship exists to increase sales and thus generate revenue for the company. Marketing interns have the unique ability to impact the bottom line, immediately. If you help the sales team in your marketing internship, the company will not forget about you.

Do not forget this. The best thing to do during your marketing internship is to make sales easy. Period.
